The Barista Express lets you get hands on with a shot of espresso, yet like the bumpers on a bowling alley, keeps you from going too sideways. With the semi-automatic machine, you’ll be manually pulling the shots of espresso with a well-weighted tamper. When not in use, that tamper hangs magnetically to the left of the coffee grind dispenser. The attached burr grinder with a half-pound bean hopper and 67-ounce water tank (a replaceable charcoal filter neutralizes tastes and odors) lets you sling espresso drinks in minutes. You control the grind size and amount, which you’ll adjust before making a bright single or double shot of espresso. This step will take some trial-and-error as the dials aren’t numbered. Precision matters with espresso: Too fine a grind can be bitter, too coarse a grind leads to the sin of weak coffee. Then, spend the next few years perfecting your latte art with the attached steam wand and included stainless steel milk jug.
